Picked at number 92 in the 1990 National Draft, Shanahan had previously played as a ruckman/forward with the Fitzroy reserves. After joining the Saints he spent two years in the St. Kilda reserves before making his senior debut. He represented both Tasmania and The Allies in his time at St. Kilda, and served as a police officer.
A member of the Saints 1996 Ansett Cup winning team, Shanahan was cut loose from St. Kilda after being torn apart by Darren Jarman in the later stages of the 1997 Grand Final loss. Seeking a two year contract he was only offered one he crossed to the Demons and made a formidable defensive unit with Anthony Ingerson and Marcus Seecamp in 1998. Shanahan struggled with form and injury in a much worse 1999 side and didn't play a game in 2000, retiring from AFL football during July. He played in the Sandringham premiership side the same year.
He is the fourth longest service AFL player never to have kicked a goal.
Shanahan remained at In 2001 he moved to Ainslie in the ACT AFL as coach where he was joined by Marcus Seecamp. In 2009 he was coach of Old Haileybury in the Victorian Amateurs, and in 2013 was assistant at St Bede's Mentone.
