After training with Richmond and Hawthorn in consecutive off-seasons, Grant was signed by St Kilda shortly before his 16th birthday. In his last year in Tasmania he'd been captain of the state's Under 16 team and an All-Australian player.

Debuting in 1984 he played 10 games across his first two seasons before becoming a regular, playing almost every match from 1986 through the 1992 season, and was picked as a Tasmanian state player and All-Australian in 1991. He finished second in the Saints Best and Fairest in 1989 and played as a ruck-rover or at full forward when Tony Lockett was unavailable.

The Saints used Grant as part of the trade bait to try and lure Barry Mitchell to Moorabbin, but after Mitchell refused to cross to St Kilda he remained with the club until the end of 1995.

Joining the Demons as a defender in the twilight of his career he made his debut in the Round 1, 1996 massacre at the hands of Geelong and remained a fixture in the team until playing his last game against Hawthorn in Round 8.

Grant crossed to Sandringham in 1997 and played in a premiership side that year. He played 53 games in total for the Zebras.
