Regarded as one of the best teenagers in the country after playing Teal Cup for Western Australia in 1983 the Demons took advantage of a breakdown in permit agreements between the VFL and WAFL to sign Edwards from South Fremantle - much to the chagrin of the Bulldogs who complained bitterly about Melbourne's conduct.
The Demons offered South $45,000 and gave Edwards a three year contract, putting him straight into the Under 19s as a 16-year-old in 1983 upon arrival, where he remained for three seasons. He played Teal Cup for Victoria the next year.
Edwards played just three games in 1986, suffering six torn hamstrings that year, and despite being retained on the list in 1987 wearing Number 51 he decided to take a year off to concentrate on his job and never returned.
