Younger brother of Jim, and like his brother also played for Prahran in the VFA. Spent three seasons in the Under 19s and Reserves before making senior debut, in 1991 he wore number 49 in the seconds. In 1989 he had also worn number 32 in reserves matches and number 59 in 1990.

He moved to Port Melbourne in 1993 and played in a Grand Final. Sydney overlooked him in the National Draft, and unwilling to wait for the pre-season draft in March he returned to Ireland to play Gaelic Football. Stynes won the 1995 All-Ireland Final with Dublin, later appearing against Australia in several International Rules series. During his four years at Melbourne he had five operations.

A third brother David played in the Melbourne Reserves during 1997.

Also wore number 59 in 1989 Reserves games.
