Strong marking forward/midfielder selected with Melbourne's second pick in the 2021 Draft. The club reportedly considered picking him with selection #19, used on Jacob van Rooyen, but he was still available by their next choice. He missed half of his first season with a foot injury, and spent the rest developing with Casey Demons, playing in their 2022 VFL premiership.

Howes signed a two year contract extension at the end of his first season, keeping him at the club until the end of 2025. He missed the Casey finals campaign the next year with a hand injury.
