The South Australian rover debuted for Central Districts in 1969 and won their Best and Fairest award twice in 1975 and 1976. He had represented South Australia twice, including the in the 1975 Interstate Carnival, before crossing to Melbourne in 1977 after finishing second in the Magarey Medal.

After a bright start where he scored six Brownlow votes in his first six games, Norsworthy played just 15 more games, suffering a broken jaw in Round 1, 1978 and played two further VFL matches before Melbourne cut him from their list in May 1979. He continued to train with Melbourne but returned to Centrals midway through the year. They had been keen to get him back before the season began but he opted to stay. He appeared in 158 SANFL games in total.
