George had played for Essendon between 1906 and 1909 before missing the 1910 season. Recruited by Melbourne in 1911 the pacy ruckman who could also play as a defender missed a month early in the season after fracturing fingers in the Round 5 loss to South Melbourne.
He was captain/coach in 1912 and until June 1913 when he resigned and was replaced by Joe Pearce. Despite links to Port Melbourne and Essendon for 1914 he instead coached VFA side North Melbourne. Despite his absence he was assigned number 31 on the team list.
George returned to Melbourne in 1915, suffering a knee injury in the Round 17, 1915 match against Essendon. He played a fortnight later in the Semi Final against Carlton and injured himself again. The final was his last VFL match and he finished his career with VFA side Prahran.
His brother Ernie played one game with South Melbourne in 1911.
