For the second week in a row, the Demons got off to a hot start before falling away after quarter time. Unlike their win over St Kilda, they didn't build up a big enough margin to withstand an opposition comeback. The Lions crafted several goals from close range after putting Melbourne's defence under siege for large parts of the second and third quarters. The home side still led by four points at the last change but were overrun, adding just one point for the rest of the game.
