Without a ten goal win by the Hawks the match would effectively become a dead rubber due to the result of the earlier Richmond/Fremantle game. Unfortunately for the Demons Hawthorn didn't stop when they hit the required margin and played out the game as if their future depended on them committing a massacre.
Three goals in front at quarter time, a devastating second term burst blew the margin out to 58. By the end of the third quarter the Hawks had 100 more possessions than their hapless opponents, just one pre-season from playing in a Grand Final, and the margin was more than 12 goals.
Best for Melbourne on a dirty day where they were missing up to 10 of their best 22 were Thompson, Yze and Brown. Brownlow Medallist Shane Woewodin spent much of the game on the bench, and other senior players in Yze, Leoncelli and Febey had little influence. At the other end Nathan Thompson was cutting Lamb, Nicholson and Wheatley to shreds.
Neale Daniher said "We were comprehensively beaten in all parts of the game. We just couldn't get our hands on the footy. I thought we were pretty lazy in our efforts to try and put any pressure on them"
