1971 Night Series Round 1

1971 Heinz Night Series, Round 1
Melbourne vs Geelong
Tuesday 14 September
Venue: Lake Oval
Attendance: 8108

Melbourne win by 60 points

Goalkickers: Graham Osborne 6, Greg Wells 3, Paul Callery 3, Robert McKenzie 1, Stan Alves 1, John Townsend 1, John Tilbrook 1, Graham Molloy 1

The game was tight in the first quarter where Melbourne full-forward Ross Dillon was being well held. When Dillon was moved to the ruck and Graham Osborne thrown to full-forward it sparked the second quarter avalanche that put the Cats away. Osborne kicked 6.6.

Geelong were better after half-time but they couldn't crack the Demons who kept them at arms length throughout the third quarter and eventually increased their lead.

Best afield were Osborne, Wells and Davis.
