Geelong had the wind in the first quarter, but with a greasy ball and strong defence standing in their way they were unable to use it effectively. Melbourne forced the play around the railway wing, negating the advantage and limiting Geelong to score behinds at first.
The Pivotonians turned the tables early in the second, immediately kicking two goals into the wind. In the end, Melbourne barely added to their lead by half time.
A late goal cut the margin to three points at the last change, with Melbourne having the wind behind them. They dominated the play, and peppered the goals at the start of the quarter. Watson missed a golden opportunity by fumbling in front of an open goal but made amends with two goals shortly after. The Redlegs were home, and only stern defence kept them from extending the margin even further.
Best were Streeter, Ogden and Ryan
