In a match played in terrible conditions Tony Lockett kicked four last quarter goals to break the game open, and to sneak the Saints over the line and into the finals by a narrow margin.
Early in the final term Melbourne led by 11 and it looked as if they were going to play spoilers, but Lockett's intervention put them in the box seat going into a last round bye.
Best for Melbourne were Glenn Lovett, Lyon and Jim Stynes.
