Melbourne initially refused him a clearance so he played with Sturt, before signing for Glenelg in 1947. After three games he was dropped and didn't play for them again.
After returning to Melbourne in 1948, McGowan attended trials with the Demons and impressed. He broke into the side late in the year lined up in a winning Preliminary Final team in his fourth game. He was suspended for attempted striking and missed both the 1948 Grand Final and the replay.
McGowan coached Frankston in 1954.
