Recruited in the 1941 pre-season, Lewis was already 6ft tall before his 18th birthday and impressed in trial games at centre half-back. A premiership player as a reserve in just his fourth game, the Grand Final was the defenders' first VFL finals game. He then left to fight for the army during the war before returning for four more games late in 1944.

Lewis was cleared back to Penshurst for the 1947 season, where he remained through 1953.

His nephew Peter Slattery was signed by Melbourne in 1966 but didn't play seniors.
