Recruited in 1959 after training with Footscray and Collingwood, the follower was given number 50 for 1959 Seconds that year.

Between 1960 and 1963 he played Reserves. In 1961 he was promoted to the senior list but battled injury. In 1962 he hurt his finger in the pre-season, then returned to training and injured his knee. He battled through most of the season to try and find fitness, before undergoing a cartilage operation. He returned to playing in 1963 but couldn't break out of the Reserves, then suffered strained back ligaments and then a relapse of his knee injury.

He was appointed captain/coach of Hamilton in 1964 as part of the deal that saw Hugh Bromell join from Hamilton.
