The youngest player selected in his draft, McNamara spent a year and a half in the VFL after playing in the first NAB Cup game of 2008 against Geelong.

He eventually made his AFL debut late in 2009 and played three of the last four games of the season as a tall defender. Unable to crack the senior side for a match in 2010, McNamara spent the entire season with the Casey Demons before injuring his ankle in the VFL finals.

He was delisted at the end of the season but the Demons picked him up again in the Rookie Draft after impressing during pre-season training. He was given a one off return to AFL football in Melbourne's Round 23 victory over Gold Coast before being delisted again and returning to South Adelaide.
