Woewodin made his WAFL debut for East Fremantle in 1995, but was overlooked in two AFL national drafts before the persistence of Melbourne's Western Australian recruiter Bernie Dunn led to the Demons giving him a chance. He was invited to the 1997 pre-season, and despite late interest from Hawthorn, Melbourne was able to take him with their third and last pick in the Pre-Season Draft. Woewodin was one of the bright spots in the 1997 wooden spoon season, playing every game and finishing equal eighth in the Rising Star award. He proved durable, not missing a match until 2001 and becoming just the fifth player at the time to play 100 consecutives games from debut.
After his solid rookie season, he continued to improve in 1998 and was one of the side's best as they went all the way to a Preliminary Final.
Melbourne won just six games in 1999, but Woewodin was one of the few genuine quality players for the year. Despite overtures from Fremantle, Woewodin signed a two year contract extension and was elevated to Deputy Vice Captain. It was the start of a career best year, after starting the season 200-1 for the Brownlow Medal, he was best on ground four times, and second best five more to take home the medal. There was an element of luck in winning outright, two votes in the Round 22 win over West Coast put him ahead of Scott West of the Western Bulldogs, but Melbourne's match committee didn't have him in their top seven players for the match. It didn't stop him winning the Best and Fairest, which he'd already secured before the last round.
Woewodin was elevated to vice-captain in 2001, but suffered a drop in form along with the rest of the side. Late in the season he revealed that he'd played the start of the year with a broken bone in his back. Fremantle continued to show interest but he turned his back on the open marked and signed a three year contract extension in July of that year. The contract guaranteed him $500,000 for both 2003 and 2004, but at the end of 2002 Melbourne needed money to re-sign Travis Johnstone and Adem Yze, and after Woewodin missed the top 10 of the Best and Fairest he was put up for trade. They were required to pay approximately $80,000 of his new contract, and received 2002 National Draft selection #16, used to recruit Daniel Bell in return. The trade was controversial amongst fans, who flooded talkback radio and the club with complaints.
Before his first season at Collingwood, Woewodin was quoted saying he hoped his new side would "spank" Melbourne when they met in Round 11, and they did. He played in their losing Grand Final side, and remained with the Pies until being delisted at the end of 2005. He nominated for the Draft in the hope of finding another club but was not picked up and returned to East Fremantle. After captaining the Sharks in 2006 and 2007 he retired and became coach. At the end of 2010 Woewodin joined the Brisbane Lions, serving as an assistant coach, as well as coaching their Reserves.
Woewodin's son Taj joined Melbourne as a father/son player at the 2021 National Draft, and debuted in 2023.
