September 1886 match vs South Williamstown

Saturday 18 September - Friendly Societies Ground
Crowd - 2000

Melbourne 3.0, 4.4, 5.5, 6.12
South Williamstown 1.3, 1.4, 2.7, 2.9

Melbourne win by 4 goals

Goalkickers: E. Lynar 3, Griffiths 1, Baird 1, Aitken 1

The red hot Melbourne registered their seventh straight win, and were rarely troubled. They goalled first through Lynar before conceding a goal from a free kick but it was the only major the visitors managed for the half. Melbourne managed three more, including one late in the half to Baird.

Both sides kicked behinds to open the third quarter before Lynar registered his third goal, capitalising on a near-miss by Baird to extend the gap to four.

The last quarter saw nine behinds in a row, including seven to Melbourne, and the home side went on to win comfortably.

In a rare feat South Williamstown were adjudged by the VFA to have lost two matches on the one day. They had failed to fulfil a match against Footscray in favour of playing Melbourne and were deemed to have lost that game. The Reds were to have originally played Ballarat but the match fell through.

Notes
Some sources have South Williamstown on 2.8
