After two years at senior level with Springvale in the VFA, and a stint with the St Kilda Under 19s and Reserves in 1991, the former Victorian Teal Cup player trained with Collingwood in the 1992 pre-season, before kicking 60 goals for Springvale. He was drafted by Melbourne at the end of that season.

Simister played three games before being delisted at the end of 1993. He trained with Carlton before the 1994 pre-season in an attempt to prolong his VFL career but was not picked up and instead joined SANFL club West Adelaide where he was leading goalkicker for three years.

Early in 1997 Simister trained with North Melbourne and played several pre-season matches with them but was not selected in the pre-season draft. He instead joined Peel Thunder, who he captained in 1999 and was their leading goalkicker four times.

In 2001 he returned to Victoria to played for Frankston in the VFL, then rejoined Peel in 2002. He stayed there until switching to East Fremantle midway through 2003, staying there until end 2004. In 2005 he played for Kambalda in the Goldfields League, then in 2006 was best on ground in the Peel Football League Grand Final while playing for South Mandurah.
