James, real first name was Melville, was expected to sign with South Melbourne after impressing in games against VFL representative teams in Ballarat during 1922 but Melbourne secretary Andrew Manzie beat them to his signature.

The coup soured when the wingman failed to reproduce his Ballarat form, and played just three games over two years. James joined Essendon in 1926 but failed to play a match.
