Melbourne finished the first half of the season with a convincing victory over a visiting Geelong combination troubled by injury and with several major deficiencies in their side. The 8.2 from 12 shots for Athol Webb was his career best, and one of the largest ever hauls under the coaching system of Norm Smith which emphasised a balanced, selfless forward line.
It was a rare triumph for the forwards, who had so often over recent years been wasteful in racking up many more behinds than goals. The forwards were fed by a quality midfield as usual, but for once they made it count and earned their highest score ever against the Cats. Geelong's only period of dominance came in the third quarter when full-forward Fred Wooller kicked four goals.
It was Melbourne's biggest winning margin against Geelong for a decade and the second highest VFL score in the previous five years.
Best were Dixon, McLean and Webb. Peter Brenchley was a late inclusion to the side to replace Frank Adams. Marquis (bruised shin) was replaced by Fenton-Smith in the last quarter and Case by Thorogood, also in the last quarter.
The win left the Demons a game behind top placed Hawthorn with a superior percentage, but also only half a game in front of fifth placed Footscray.
