Another weekend with cold winds and rain caused scoring to be affected, and after a series of creditable performances without winning the Demons narrowly went under again. The Magpies were better suited to the conditions, with their small men handling the ball well in the conditions, but they didn't have it all their own way.
Too dependent on forward Bob McKenzie in the mud, it took 45 minutes for the Demons to kick their first goal. While their defence held up well they didn't have anything to defend until the second quarter. They failed to score in the first quarter and added just four points in the third, but with the wind in the last quarter they more than doubled their score and made the Magpies work hard to hold them out.
Three goals in five minutes got the home side back into it, and Collingwood had one played carried off and another noticeably injured. The margin was back to nine points at half time but Collingwood kicked away again with the only four goals of the third quarter. The margin was over five goals before another fightback, and when Spencer twice goalled from close range the margin was back to seven. Melbourne couldn't get their noses in front and Collingwood steadied to win.
Best were Beckwith, Williams and Arnold. Gloury and Thomson were unused 19th and 20th men.
