Melbourne had racked up a huge score in their last meeting with Footscray, but the Tricolours were considered to be a much better side than they had been in late 1926.

The visitors did put in a much improved performance in the first half, kicking the first three goals of the game before Melbourne scored - the second week in a row the Fuschias had a first quarter scare - but weren't good enough to maintain that form for a full four quarters against the reigning premiers.

Melbourne remained in third place, still only percentage in front of fourth and fifth but three clear wins and percentage ahead of sixth.

The win left Melbourne in third place, equal to fourth placed Richmond and fifth place Carlton but with a significant percentage gap on their finals rivals.

Taylor, Wittman and Vine were best.
