After narrowly holding the lead at quarter time, Melbourne fell apart in the first part of the second quarter and allowed the Crows to open a lead of nearly five goals. They then stormed back into the contest, cutting the gap to 10 at the long break. In the third quarter, with Tom McDonald surprisingly thrown forward when he kicked two quick goals, the Dees took over and booted seven goals to one. A further five goals to two in the last quarter delivered a famous away win.

The game ended with two umpires, after an emergency umpire had been used earlier in the night and another umpire was lost to injury before the last quarter.

Best were Viney, Oliver and Vince. Jayden Hunt suffered a concussion. Bernie Vince was fined $1000 for umpire contact.
