Having thrashed North Melbourne two days earlier, the Fuschias backed up for their second game of the long weekend and won their eighth game in a row. It was the last time two rounds were played over one long weekend.

In front of the largest home and away crowd in the history of the league to that point Melbourne were kicking themselves out of the game early. Johnson missed several easy shots early, and Carlton recovered to lead by quarter time. The Blues remained marginally ahead across the middle quarters.

Melbourne finally kicked away - accurately - in the last few minutes to continue their record breaking start to the year. They were helped with a Carlton player was caught running in front of goal after taking a mark, allowing the winning goal.

Best were Warne-Smith, Johnson and Vine. Stan Wittman was reported for elbowing but found not guilty.
