Another win saw Melbourne into the five after the opening weeks of the season for the first time since early 1984, ending Collingwood's winning streak in the process. Inspired by Robert Flower returning from injury to kick six goals the Demons led at every change and controlled all but seven minutes of the game.

Melbourne attacked fiercly, and in Steve O'Dwyer they had a dominating ruckman. Robert Flower returned from a broken finger and was put in a pocket to get back into touch - he kicked six goals. Greg Healy was also dominant in the first half.

Bret Bailey tagged Tony Shaw and kept the Magpie skipper to a handful of possessions.

Danny Hughes beat Brian Taylor so comprehensively that the Collingwood full-forward lost the plot and found himself reported. When Hughes won a free kick against him a bloodied Taylor charged the Melbourne player, causing another free kick to be awarded down the ground. He kicked three goals but all were in the last quarter when the game was over and earned a three week suspension to go along with his goals.

John Northey spoke of the spirit of Melbourne. "I could feel the new attitude during pre-season and they now have a feeling that they can do it" he said.
