Without a win in five weeks of the new season the Demons could have done without facing the 4-1 Cats and their new full forward Mark Jackson. It had been more than two years since Jacko had been a Dee, but after some of the scores his old side had conceded in those two years there was every chance he might rack up a cricket score, after all he'd already kicked 26 in five games for the Cats.
The Demons were saved from Jacko's wrath by the ineptitude of his teammates. Well held by Danny Hughes, the forward booted three goals but only had seven kicks for the day as the Demons broke their losing streak in style with a thumping victory.
Nine goals to two in the first quarter, including three to Kelvin Templeton in the first eight minutes, and Melbourne were well on their way. Victory was had even without Templeton (groin injury) and Darryl Cox (hamstring) who both had to leave the game at quarter time due to injury. Later Chris Connolly suffered a shoulder injury but had to stay on as a forward pocket due to a lack of interchange players.
When Melbourne led by 11 goals at the long break the match was over. Matched up against the one Geelong positive, Michael Turner, Robert Flower was one of his side's best on a wing with 25 touches and two goals, but it was young John Fidge in his third game who lit the MCG up with four goals. Peter Moore too was dominant in the middle and had 27 possessions to go along with his win the ruck.
Despite his team already being in a hole just over a month into the season Barassi praised the side "We knew we were much better" he said, "The fact that we stuck to our guns even with no men on the bench was very good. There was a lot of frustration that we were better than we've been showing". The coach revealed that he’d held a midweek dinner with senior players to discuss what they could do to boost the side’s fortune.
