Without a home win in the opening month, the Pies sat 1-3 and desperately needed a win to reinvigorate their season. They got it in commanding fashion, becoming the first team almost a decade to score 100 against Melbourne. The Pies won by eight goals on the scoreboard, but it could have been so much more. Much of the drive came from their ruck division,
They dominated all over the ground, the dangerous Ron Barassi was cut out of the game by John Knox, and Terry Waters kicked seven.

For the first time all season the Pies handballed well and worked as a team, and they were lethal in attack. The only time Melbourne looked likely was in the first quarter, but they were kicking with the wind so a three point lead at the first change was barely adequate. The danger signs were there early when the Pies immediately goalled into the breeze. Melbourne struck back, but conceded three goals to Waters by quarter time. They then turned the tables on the Pies by kicking the first goal of the second quarter into the breeze, but it was their last of the term, and the Pies piled on five straight.

Unable to break through Collingwood's defence, the wind offered no benefit in the third term, each team kicked a pair of goals, leaving Melbourne dead and buried at the last change. The result was sealed when the home side quickly added their 11th goal.

Best were Brian Dixon, Tassie Johnson and Len Mann. Dawson replaced Jenkinson in the last quarter. Leahy was an unused reserve.
