The Demons travelled to Windy Hill trying to get their season back on track after losing their first game for the year a week earlier but came away with what remains the equal 19th highest score the club has ever conceded.

Essendon dominated everywhere, taking advantage of that Melbourne losing Robbie Flower to concussion early in the game and Brian Wilson during the third term with a shoulder injury. Danny Hughes remained on the ground but clearly under sufferance as he was hobbling around on crutches after the game because of a sprained ankle. They were also slowed after an midweek night match in the rain.

Melbourne hadn't beaten Essendon at Windy Hill for a decade, and their run continued. The Bombers' small players were on top and while the Demons were just 21 points behind at the last change they conceded two in a row at the start of the final term and were beaten.
