After registering their third straight win of the year the Demons went into a fortnight of games against the other two undefeated sides. Before they could meet Collingwood in Round 5 they had to get past St Kilda in an away game.

Melbourne eventually came out on top after a furious last quarter comeback. They had been second best all day and found themselves three goals down at the last change before kicking 5.7 to 2.2 to snatch a dramatic victory. St Kilda had a narrow lead at quarter time, before kicking away to a near four goal lead at the half.

By three-quarter time the margin was three goals, and Melbourne's inaccuracy almost cost them dearly. They were 13 points behind with 10 minutes to play despite being down to 17 fit men, before kicking two goals to get within a straight kick. St Kilda then steadied to kick two goals entering time on and it looked like the game was over before Melbourne launched an amazing comeback, booting three goals in three minutes - led by Fischer in the ruck and La Fontaine in the centre - to snatch the game out of the fire.

The Saints still had time to regain the lead, and in the dying minutes they went forward on numerous occasions only to be held out by Melbourne's defence. Gordon Ogden saved the day in the last 30 seconds when he marked on the goalline to defuse a St Kilda attack.

During the game Emselle was controversially felled by an opponent behind play, suffering a badly bruised jaw and while Melbourne considered taking further action through the VFL they eventually decided against it.

Collingwood too remained undefeated, setting up a top of the table clash the following Saturday. The Demons remained narrowly in front of the Magpies on percentage.

Best were Fischer, Ogden and Beames. Emselle replaced Barassi (suspected concussion) in the first quarter. Lewis was a late withdrawal due to a knee injury, replaced by Kinnear.
