Melbourne had been forced to slog through the mud the previous Wednesday and were missing Jack Leith through injury, but any ill-effects from that match were equalised by Geelong visiting with an under-strength team missing both their centre and his understudy.

The ground was in poor condition again, and as a consequence the game was not of any great standard. Dick Pirrie got the first goal of the game within the first few minutes in his first match for the season, and Elliott got his first from a free kick not long after. The home side were doing it easy early on as Geelong failed to display a coherent system or to keep a firm footing on the heavy turf. Melbourne were also gaining ground with excellent hand-passing and it took the Pivotonians 25 minutes to score their lone behind of the term.

Geelong had the best of the second quarter but did not manage to make any impact on the margin, and they went two goals behind going into the last term. In an evenly contested last quarter the majority of the play took place in the middle of the ground, and while the visitors launched a comeback they just fell short. The First goal of the last quarter came in the opening minute, then Geelong missed another shot immediately after. They got another one to get within a goal but Melbourne squeezed home narrow winners.

Best were Wood, Herring and Sholl.
