A trip to Geelong was one of the most difficult assignments in football for good teams, let alone a side that had tasted victory just three times in 12 months. Despite the gulf in class between the two sides and the Pivotonians home ground advantage Melbourne pushed them all the way after a disappointing third quarter.

Most of the interest in the game came in the first half, where there was never a clear goal between the teams. Incigneri opened the scoring for Melbourne, and his side held a narrow lead at quarter time courtesy of a late goal to Fairbairn. Geelong's forward play was faulty, but they pushed narrowly ahead at the break.

Melbourne lost the game in the third quarter, conceding three goals to nil. From 27 points down, a comeback was assisted by Geelong's play dropping off in the last quarter but it was still an encouraging finish for a winless side.

Best were Lugton, Gray and Monk.
