Heavy rain threatened the postponement of matches, but unfortunately for Melbourne games went ahead and they were easily beaten. Any chance they had of dragging South down in the mud evaporated when the Lake Oval was one of the few grounds to hold up well in the face of the earlier rain and a strong wind, with footing and handling not measurably affected.

Melbourne had the use of the wind in the first quarter, and it was their best for the game even though they only managed one goal and went into the break on level terms. From there on they were beaten in all departments. The margin extended to five goals at half time and there was no way back for the Reds.

Best were Monk, Pearce and Irwin.
