Two losses in a row had put Melbourne's premiership defence in jeopardy, but they got their season back on track with an easy win over the league's traditional easybeats despite missing important players Cumberland, Moodie, Leith, Sholl and Moriarty.

A small crowd showed up, and they saw St Kilda playing bedraggled footy. It still took until the third quarter, when the visitors failed to score, for Melbourne to kick away to a match winning lead.

Best were McGinis, Bowe and Parkin.
