With their season long over, Melbourne's only remaining interest was whether they could keep Hawthorn out of the finals. They pushed the Hawks for the first half, but couldn't stop them equalling a record they'd jointly held with Carlton of making finals for 11 straight years.
A frantic first quarter saw Hawthorn kick six of the 10 goals, but they couldn't shake Melbourne off and relied on a late goal from Jason Dunstall to lead by 11 points at half time. The Hawks took over after the break, extending their lead to 40 points before a late goal cut the last change margin to 34. Hawthorn seemingly made sure of their spot in the six with early goals in the final term, before Melbourne piled on seven goals that left them just seven points behind in time on. Todd Viney charged out of the next centre bounce, but his attempted kick into the forward 50 was blocked and Hawthorn worked the ball to the other end for the winning goal.

Speaking about what would be his last game as Melbourne coach John Northey complimented his side on kicking seven goals in the last quarter, and said: "It was a fitting match for a final, and the way our boys came back at the opposition was terrific. The pressure we put on them really made them work."
During the Reserves curtain raiser, Hawk Dermott Brereton responded to a spectator's derogatory comments by walking up to the man, taking his glasses off, then handing them back to him.
