Highest score against Collingwood and at Victoria Park

Despite going in an inexperienced side that looked like on of their weakest of the year on paper, the Demons came away with their highest score ever at Victoria Park. The rampant victory came against a Collingwood side going through a traumatic off-field boardroom brawl between the incumbent committee and the self-styled 'New Magpies'.

Without Peter Keenan and Brent Crosswell the Demons were expected to struggle, but despite a second quarter blast from the Magpies they did enough to come away with a big win. Mark Jackson did his best work early with three goals in the first 19 minutes before being cut out of the game in the second. He returned with a vengeance in the third and booted seven goals in total. His last goal involved holding Billy Picken off with one hand, trapping the ball and kicking a goal in one motion. The Age described his performance as an "ever growing repertoire of slapstick, hi-jinks and harmless japes".

Glenn McLean was impressive in Keenan's absence and the backline combo of Smith, Giles and Icke were dominant. A team Barassi described as "18 goers" kicked eight goals in the first 20 minutes of the third quarter and the contest was dead. Melbourne's pace and aggression got them back into the contest after Collingwood had outscored them by 30 points in the second term.

Flower, Wilson and Healy were Melbourne's best.
