At the MCG as the home team for the first time in 1965 the Demons unveiled their 1964 Premiership Pennant. Mrs Duffy, wife of club president Donald Duffy unfurled the flag after it had been presented by VFL President Sir Kenneth Luke.

After the ceremony came the job of winning a game of football, and despite having eight scoring shots in the first quarter the Demons managed just one goal and went into the break two points behind. They shaved a point off the deficit in the second quarter but were still behind and looking anything but defending premiers. North were playing a physical, tough brand of football that the Demons couldn't cope with. John Townsend came off second best from an early shirtfront and suffered a concussion.

Midway through the third quarter North had opened up a 15 point lead, but when Norm Smith threw John Lord to full-forward the complexion of the match was changed. Within minutes he had outmuscled North full-back Graham Ryan and kicked two goals from marks.

North hit back again though and entering time on in the last quarter they were in front. Melbourne snatched the lead with two goals in time on, first from Bob Johnson then another soon after to make the result safe.

Lord, Kenneally and Williams were the Demons' best. Graeme Watson and Kerry Rattray both suffered fractured jaws. Tony Anderson was concussed. Townsend (concussion) was replaced by Robbie in the first quarter and Watson by Rattray in the second.
