Richmond stunned Collingwood in the opening game of the season, while Melbourne had just fallen over the line against South Melbourne so the Tigers rightfully started favourites but in another thriller the Redlegs won their second game to start the year.
Melbourne's recent record against Richmond had been poor, not ending any quarter in front of them since returning to the competition in 1919. It was a close run thing on this day, but this time they led all the way and fell over the line in the last few minutes. They'd been assisted by two goals from kick-in blunders by Richmond's usually reliable Vic Thorp.
In a high standard game Melbourne had better of the game in the first quarter with the advantage of a slight breeze, recovering from conceding the first goal with three in a row to end the quarter. The first 15 minutes of the second term was dominated by the Tigers, with two goals in the first few minutes and six to one to take the lead for the first time before Melbourne took over in the last 10 minutes and grabbed the lead back with two goals in a row to Matthews and Wilson.
Each side had spells of dominance in the second half, with Melbourne kicking the first goal of the third quarter but then conceding two in a row to gift the lead to Richmond for a second time. They added another, but two quick goals to Tulloh and Haines restored the lead.
The home side capitalised on one of Thorp's failed kick-ins at the start of the last quarter to register another goal, before Richmond levelled again. The sides traded goals before a mistake by Richmond's Minogue gave Melbourne victory. He marked within 40 yards of goal but tried a pass which was cut off, allowing George Haines the winning goal.
Best were Tulloh, House and Haines. There were reportedly 107 free kicks paid, more than one a minute, including 32 in the first quarter alone. Richmond won the count 57-50.
