After opening their season with a draw Melbourne were brought back to earth by the mighty Magpies, playing against their ex-champion Percy Wilson for the first time.
The Reds debuted another new player, after having nine in their ranks for the first round, and they were closer after the first quarter than they had been a week earlier but poor disposal skills meant this time there was no blistering comeback to be had in the second quarter.
Collingwood were far better by hand - with some suggestion that they were actually throwing the ball - and the applause that Wilson got when he ran onto the ground was the only charity that the black and white gave Melbourne's new playing coach all day. In comparison to the quick Magpies the visitors were slow to the ball and in disposing of it, which cost them a number of scoring opportunities.
The Pies got off to a good start after a faulty kick-in by Walker gifted them their first goal, and a misunderstanding involving the same player - who would never play another senior game - and Jack Brake cost them their second. His nightmare first quarter continued when he missed a desperate attempt to mark the ball and it allowed the Pies a third goal.
Haines was the best Melbourne player, roving and kicking three goals but seeing so much of his good work in the centre undone by his misfiring forwards. Lord and Wallace were also amongst the best.
The win left the Pies as the only side in the league not to have dropped a point.
