The struggling Blues stuck with Melbourne for the first half before a 5 goal third-quarter blitz by David Schwarz sunk them. Garry Lyon had been his side's most deadly key forward in the first half with three goals, at which point the Blues were forced to move Stephen Silvagni onto him.

It was the Demons biggest win over Carlton since 1955. After the match Blues coach David Parkin said that if they made the 8 Melbourne "might have the capacity to cause a bit of havoc".

Tingay, Schwarz and Lyon were best. Anthony Ingerson was also deadly on the in-form Lance Whitnall. The Melbourne defender only gathered eight possessions, but he completely shut Whitnall down and forced the Blues to shift him into defence.

Brent Grgic failed to come up from a hamstring complaint and was replaced in the selected side by Damien Gaspar for his first game of the year.

Stephen Tingay was reported for charging but found not guilty.

Neale Daniher said "We really rated Carlton and to get away with a big win today will give our club a lot of confidence. It was a fairly convincing win in the end. I said to the players the next month could be an exciting time for the club."
