Despite having just three goals to the last change Melbourne almost sprung an amazing comeback, falling just 11 points short. Had they kicked better in the last quarter the great escape might have been pulled off.

The first three quarters were at worst a minor annoyance for the Blues. With the Demons not tackling hard or applying any pressure they did as they pleased, but at the last change Ian Ridley urged his players on to one last big effort in the fourth term and they delivered. 10 minutes into the last term they took over and reduced a 40 point gap to 11.

Stan Alves played a brilliant game, and Ray Biffin outclassed Greg Kennedy in front of goals. Paul Callery was also prominent in his 50th game.

Future Demon Phil Pinnell was best afield for the Blues.

Despite the victory it was Carlton's lowest score against Melbourne at the MCG since 1964.
