With no bearing on the makeup of the final four, the two sides fought out an entertaining battle for the first three quarters before Collingwood ran away with the victory.

Aided by a strong breeze in the first quarter, the Pies were unable to get the jump on their opponents and actually trailed at quarter time. With their chance to use the wind in the second term the Redlegs put on five goals, but allowed Collingwood six.

By the last change Collingwood had extended their margin to 18 points. They did enough to go away with the game and win in the last quarter.

Earle, Warne-Smith and Vine were Melbourne's best.

Melbourne's losing streak against the Magpies in home and away games stretched to 10 years with the defeat.

Reserves
Melbourne 15.13 defeated Collingwood 6.9
