With the top four already decided, and Geelong unable to either win a double chance or be knocked out of the finals they had very little to play for. They brought a weak team to the city - including Dick Grigg who hadn't played league football since 1914 but would retain his spot the next week - and conceded their highest score of the season. Geelong had freely spoken of their desire to take a lesser team into the game, and Melbourne noted at a subsequent league meeting that they should not have been so public in admitting it.

It was Melbourne's highest total since 1909, highlighted by the first 10 goal haul by a Melbourne player in VFL history. Harry Harker took advantage of the weakened opposition to do as he pleased.

The match became a glorified exhibition, with both sides playing clever, exciting football. Melbourne jumped out to a six goal to three lead during the second quarter before Geelong scored three goals in 10 minutes to cut the margin to eight points at half time.

The visitors drew even closer with the first goal of the third quarter, but from there they were beaten comfortably. Melbourne kicked five goals in a row to kill to the contest.

Harker, Wilson and Tulloh were best.
