In a close game, the sides were tied on goals after the first three changes, with the Bulldogs leading due to an extra six behinds. Melbourne kicked the first goal of the last quarter to tie scores, before three straight by the Dogs gave them a 16 point lead. Melbourne had four scoring shots in a row but only managed 1.3 and were beaten.

Due to a lack of tall forward options Harrison Petty was sent forward for the first time in his career and kicked three goals.

Best were Gawn, Viney and Salem. Brayshaw (corked buttock) and Harmes (hip) were injured.
