Melbourne's season was petering out, and they were only lucky Carlton started the game inaccurately or they'd have suffered an even bigger beating in the second last match of the season. On the other hand the Blues were playing for a spot in the top four and needed percentage so were ruthless in racking up 40 scoring shots and an easy four points to give themselves breathing space over fifth placed Fitzroy.

Outplayed badly in the first quarter, the Reds improved in the second quarter and looked like they might make a game of it. Then they conceded an eight goal to nil three quarter and the match was lost.

Best were Usher, Sambell and Murray.

With one game to play Melbourne were a game and percentage above both Hawthorn and Essendon.

Melbourne 14.11 d. Carlton 11.8
