Largely abandoned by fans as their chances of playing in the finals disappeared, Melbourne did their bit to keep their hopes alive by comfortably beating Hawthorn but unfortunately for them Carlton had also won - a 30-23 victory over Richmond in the lowest scoring match of the afternoon - and remained a game in front going into the last round.

Another reason for the low crowd was the abysmal weather which hit Melbourne, with rain and heavy winds which ruined any chance of matches being played as spectacles. Hawthorn were one of the chief offenders of the day, failing to notch a goal in the first three quarters before Melbourne slackened off and allowed them to boot three consoliaton majors.

Mollison, Barnes and Corbett were best.
