The Redlegs continued to warm up for the finals with a comfortable win over Footscray, set up by a slashing first quarter where they booted nine goals to one on the way to their second highest score of the season.

Not many fans saw the victory, with a tiny crowd turning up for a dead rubber match between a certain finalist and an also-ran. The Redlegs were without Warne-Smith and Thomas due to injury, as well as Collins who had suffered a bereavement in the family and other than their slashing opening term they seemed to treat it as nothing more than a training drill.

After booting the first eight goals of the match it was over at quarter time, and Melbourne extended their lead relatively little through the next four quarters but that was as much to do with their own poor kicking for goal as it was for the resistance of the visitors.

After taking a ten goal lead into the final quarter they added just two more, but with the Footscray players beginning to adopt rough and tumble tactics like tripping many of the Melbourne players preferred to save themselves for the finals rather than get injured with nothing on the line.

Johnson was best, along with Tymms and Lawrence.
