Another loss dropped the Reds even further into the wooden spoon mire, but they only had themselves to blame after taking a lead into half time.

The injury wracked visitors did their best for three quarters and were just two points down at the last change before totally imploding in the final term and adding just one point while their opponents kicked 3.9.

The match was played in slippery and muddy conditions due to rain the previous day and on the morning of the match. The weather was fine by the time the ball was bounced on Saturday, but the damage to the surface had already been done and the match suffered as a result.

Peck and Donaldson were best. Richmond's loss to South Melbourne elsewhere meant that Melbourne could still dodge the wooden spoon with a win and a Tigers loss in the final round.
