Melbourne kicked the highest score of any team against the top of the table Blues all season, but it didn't stop them from suffering a four goal loss. There was no shame in being beaten by that margin by a team who finished the round with a percentage of 140.6.

A strong wind was blowing in Carlton's favour in the first quarter and used the breeze to open up a match winning lead. Melbourne won the second, but by allowing Carlton to kick two goals they all but conceded any chance they had of a comeback. Melbourne were badly outweighed by their opponents and their talls couldn't mark well enough to make a game of it.

The Blues kicked away in the third and the margin was out to eight goals in the last quarter before Melbourne rode the breeze home to keep the margin respectable. Their score in the last quarter was a point more than the first three combined.

Haines was Melbourne's best along with Farrow (until he hurt his leg) and Percy Wilson.
