With their finals hopes already destroyed Melbourne took solace with a win over their next door neighbours who were also out of contention for the Semi Finals.

The Reds welcomed back Hughie Odgers, who was listed in the team under the assumed surname of "Hughes", for his first game since Round 6, but Odgers was instantly recognisable to the fans thanks to a hint in that week's Football Record that they would see an old player under a new name.

Even after losing two players before the game with injuries, the black and yellow held sway for most of the day. They jumped to a four goal lead at quarter time, but with no wind to speak of decided not to put an extra man in defence in the second quarter, allowing the Reds to get back in the game. Richmond led by four points at the last change before the visitors ran over the top of them with a four goal burst in the final quarter.

Purse was exceptional off half-back, and many of Brereton's goals came from Richmond defenders muddling themselves with each other trying to stop him. George, Maguire and Pearce were also amongst the best.

Notes
There is a suggestion that the player branded as Hughes either did not play or was actually Evans. Likely Odgers as he hadn't played since Round 6.
